Important exceptions

  • Color mutation matters. Some mutations can reduce, alter, or eliminate age clues such as normal forehead barring or a pale adult iris ring.
  • Cere color is not a clock. It is affected by sex, mutation and reproductive condition.
  • Adult ages overlap heavily. Once mature, appearance usually cannot separate a 2-year-old from a 4-year-old with confidence.
  • Health can mimic “old age.” New lethargy, feather changes, weight loss or rough feet deserve health assessment rather than an age assumption.

Fast identification workflow

  1. Check records first: hatch date, breeder paperwork or a documented leg band beats visual estimation.
  2. Look at the forehead: strong bars reaching toward the cere support a pre-first-molt juvenile estimate in normally marked birds.
  3. Check the eyes: dark juvenile eyes vs. a developing/clear pale iris ring can support the age band, if the bird’s mutation follows the normal pattern.
  4. Use beak, cere and feet only as supporting evidence: they are less reliable for a precise age.
  5. Choose the broadest band that fits all clues: do not force an exact month when markers conflict.
